Reflections on Kahakukahi & AccesSurf's Day at the Beach
The ocean has an extraordinary way of bringing people together, but organizations like Kahakukahi Ocean Academy remind us what true community in the water looks like. Their recent Day at the Beach event— held at Launiupoko this past Saturday, August 29, in collaboration with AccesSurf Hawaii— was a deeply moving celebration of ocean access, rich family heritage, and the healing power of the sea.
Bridging the Gap in the Water
At its core, Kahakukahi works tirelessly to represent and empower underserved communities in the water. For many, ocean sports and adaptive beach days can feel out of reach, but Kahakukahi breaks down those barriers. By creating a warm, inclusive environment, they ensure that everyone (regardless of background or physical ability) has the opportunity to experience the therapeutic energy and pure joy of the ocean (Image courtesy of Kahakukahi).
A Legacy Written on the Waves: The Schweitzer Family
What made this particular gathering extra special was the presence of deep ocean history and incredible family resilience. For the first time since the Lahaina fires, the matriarch of the Schweitzer family— grandmother to local professional watermen Zane and Matty Schweitzer— was able to join the community on the sand, present in her walker surrounded by her entire family (Image courtesy of Kahakukahi).
The story behind the Schweitzer family is legendary: Zane and Matty's grandparents hold the original patent for windsurfing. Their grandfather co-invented the sport, and their grandmother was the very first female windsurfer! That passion for the ocean spans generations, from World Champion windsurfing parents to Zane’s work leading Kahakukahi Ocean Academy and Matty capturing ocean culture behind the lens.
Seeing this family together on the sand, sharing their pioneering legacy while supporting ocean access for a new generation, brought an overwhelming sense of pride, strength, and continuity to the day.
Showing Up with Heart
Events like Day at the Beach come to life through the spirit of everyone who shows up to pitch in, whether that’s helping set up tables and gear or helping participants safely enter the water. Our Cannery store manager, Nalani (far right in yellow), had the privilege of attending and helping set up for the day. Hearing her talk about her experience, her passion for Kahakukahi’s mission was radiant. It’s why making it to every Day at the Beach event has become a personal goal of hers, and why supporting Kahakukahi's vision of ocean equity means so much to our entire team at KaiAloha Supply (Image courtesy of Kahakukahi).
